The heart of any school−the main factor in how well students learn
and how much fun they have along the way−is the quality of its staff.
Live & Learn Sailing has been successfully teaching sailors since 1984.
It is one of the founding schools in the American Sailing Association.
We take sailors from wherever they start to wherever they want to go.
Live & Learn Sailing emphasizes Safety, Skills, Confidence, Fun and Respect:
► Respect for the Boat
► Respect for our Shipmates
► Respect for the Traditions of the Sea
We set very high standards then help each student achieve them.
We offer group classes — at all levels.
We specialize in custom private instruction on your own boat.
When you are ready, we lead flotilla sails in the U.S. and abroad.
Davy Thorstad, Live and Learn President and founder, has been teaching sailing for over 30 years. As a professional skipper, he manages large power & sail yachts of 50′~150′.
He works with Jr. YC and Sea Scout youth sailing programs. Beyond training activities, he also races & delivers boats. Davy uses his broad experience sailing in Mexico, Costa Rica, Belize, and the Caribbean to organize our flotilla sails.
Lan Yarbrough, Director of Operations and Head Instructor, has taught sailing for over 20 years
in the Chesapeake Bay, San Francisco Bay,
Mexico, Egypt and the Mediterranean.
He is a co-writer of the new, widely acclaimed
ASA textbooks Sailing Made Easy for basic sailing
and Cruising Made Easy for the basic cruising level.
His great love is teaching navigation of all kinds.
All of our Live & Learn Sailing instructors are selected for their skills, experience, and
— most of all — for a proven ability to transmit their joy of sailing to their students.
This human touch, this passion to teach, is the ultimate key to Live & Learn Sailing.
